Trip to the Auckland Museum

We hopped on the bus to go to the Auckland Museum. It was a frightening experience because the bus stopped halfway up the school hill and rolled back and then stopped again and went up the hill so slowly!

When we finally got there, we had never been so excited. It looked AMAZING! We looked inside and saw heaps of statues. We had morning tea and then we had free time with our groups. My group first walked over to the Volcano room but I didn’t go in there because I looked and sounded like everyone that was in there was screaming their hearts off!! They all told me that the seats moved and they got really scared.

Our Variety Show Experience

Kapa Haka

The curtains are down the lights are dime I hear the footsteps of the narrators Neveem, Georgia, Ella, Jack the curtains slowly open and the lights come on and then everyone cheers and claps then we start our amazing performance. Behind the scenes there were 100 elephants stomping down the stairs i looked up the lights were blue and in front of me there’s a circle window and we wait. We slowly walk on stage to 989 people in front of us our stomachs have butterflies because we were going first. Our performance over everyone was like “how was it” “how was it” “how was it” “it was amazing we can’t wait to get back on stage again” stated the kapa haka group with excitement.

GLEE Performance

When I arrived, Jodie (Sophie’s mum) signed me in and Sophie H in and I was so nervous and scared. Kapa Haka was the first in the performance and then it was a couple of groups before me. When I was walking there I had butterflies in my tummy but at the same time I was jumping up and down so much because even though I was really nervous I was also so excited! I couldn’t stop shaking. When the speakers finished, it was GLEE. There were hundreds and hundreds of people in the crowd. Sophie Wood started talking and then one of the dances started. When it was done I was so relieved!

Kapa Haka Performance

When I arrived to Bruce mason, I felt anxious in my stomach. I was nervous because my group was going first. I ran down the stairs backstage. We sat down ready to go on the stage with my group. Slowly, the curtain opened. We sang our songs and walked of stage and the audience clapped. I realised that I didn’t need to be nervous because it was actually fun. We ran up the stairs to the Hauraki room and waited for all the groups to finish. So I got some cards pens and colouring book out. Slowly time went and the whole school went on stage to sing we go together and Aotearoa.

Before the Show

I paced around the room feeling a variety of feelings like nervous, excited, proud, and worried. 5 minutes until the show starts! I paced a little more. When Miss Downson gave us a nod and we stepped onto the stage.

The spooky door (by Scarlett Ion)

I hadn’t seen the door before. It wasn’t there last night. Cautiously, I turned the handle. When I opened the door, I fainted. Then I woke back up. I walked in and it was like a nightmare shining through my eye. I could see lots of killer clowns hunting through my soul. They were like my mum and dad being really angry at me. Suddenly I heard my brother yelling “look out Scarlett! and I fell. I fell into a deep hole. It was like my room but floating somewhere. When I landed I saw my cat. I said hi but he hissed back at me. I wondered why and then he looked back and he had no eyes left in his eye socket.....

Term 1, Week 10 Inquiry: Famous buildings and structures

Room 12 has been researching about famous buildings and structures around the world. Then we all chose one favourite structure to make a poster about them.

Here is an example from Georgia. She did it on the Leaning Tower of Pisa and you can find all the important facts about it on the poster.

Term 1, Week 6 Visual Art: Name Monsters

For the name monsters, we first folded a piece of a coloured paper and folded in half. Then we wrote our names in pencil in block letters and cut the letters out. When we unfolded the paper our name became the monster! Then we cut it out where the pencil line was. Then when it became a monster we upgraded it with drawings on it like a creepy eyeball and a blood dripping mouth and it turned out like a real monster. It was a great experience making a monster out of our names. Here are a few examples. These are Matilda and Nuzhin's.

Term 1, Week 6: Welcome, Mrs Smith!

On Monday assembly, we welcomed Mrs Smith our new UHPS principal. During the assembly… we sang Utaina and Te aroha. We gave her flowers and said that we all welcome her to our new school. When we went outside… we sang nga iwi e and we planted a tree for her to show that she is a family of UHPS now.

Due to rainy weather, we did not get to do much sport this week. So instead, the Sports Team (Aidan, Sophie H & Bre) went to interview Mrs Smith and asked her questions about herself and her first week.

IMG_1966.JPG

Recently in Room 12, we have been learning about graphs. Last week we learnt to draw bar graphs and this week we practiced drawing line graphs.

We also got together in groups and decided on a question we would like to find about our class e.g. what is our favourite animal?

IMG_1673.JPG

We went around the classroom with a tally sheet and recorded the answers. Then we drew a graph using the answers.

Term 1, Week 6 Inquiry: School Vision Logo

FullSizeRender 16.jpg

Our school vision is Connect, Climb, Create. We made a school logo of this. This is from Matilda and Jessica. Our school is a heart to all other things in the world and what opens is a journey to a life! And that's what we think our school is supposed to be like so we made these so we want you all students out there to learn what we are learning.

This connect climb create logo was created by Ava and Sophie S.

We all wanted to make the school a place of great learning so that's why we put these logos on here!

Week 4, Term 1: Family Wheels Day

Bike day 6.jpegOn Saturday last week, the bike track at our school was opened for the very first time. It was really busy. There were ramps, hills and heaps of jumps. It was awesome! We loved that there were prizes and there was even a track for the scooters and skateboards. It was the best day of our lives!

Week 5, Term 1 Visual Art: Pop-art portrait

FullSizeRender 9.jpgFullSizeRender 10.jpg

Last week we learnt to draw pop art. The first thing we did was we got a photo of ourselves. Then we used a pencil to shade the back of the photo and then taped it on a big, white piece of A3 paper. Then we traced around our faces and tops using a sharp pencil. Then we un-taped our photos off the A3 paper and we used only the primary colours (red, yellow, and blue) to colour our faces and then we chose one word that describes us and put it above our portrait. Here are pop-art portraits by Scarlett and Nuzhin.

Week 5, Term 1 Writing: Simple, compound and complex sentences

Image result for simple compound and complex sentences clip art

A few days ago we were learning to understand the differences between simple, compound and complex sentences. For example, "we have to go to bed when the clock chimes at ten o'clock" - this is a complex sentence. A simple sentence has one independent clause, and a complex sentence has one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. A compound sentence has two independent clauses e.g. I was too busy to play SO he went outside without me. So is the conjunction that joins two independent clauses. A simple sentence has one independent clause with one or more nouns and one or more verbs.

Week 4, Term 1 Poetry: Margaret Wise Brown

IMG_1696.JPG
This week Room 12 made our own "Important Book" inspired by Margaret Wise Brown's book called The Important Book. The Important Book is a series of patterned poems where it describes different parts of an object but always goes back to that one important thing about the object.

To make our own Important Book we interviewed someone in class that we do not know well and asked many questions to find out interesting things about that person. Then we wrote a poem about that person.

So if you've ever wondered what kind of awesome people we are, have a read at this special book!

The above is an example of the Important Book by Matilda about Jamie.

Week 4, Term 1: Language Experience

This week for our language experience we had to close our eyes and hear Mrs Millet blow a balloon until it finally popped. As a class we spent time together to come up with some great expressions to describe what we saw,  felt, heard and thought during this experience. We would like to share Breanna's writing because she included some great metaphors.

"When Mrs Millet came, she told us to sit on the mat and close our eyes. Then a mean old witch came in and started to stretch something. I did not know what it was so I started to get worried. Then she started to blow it up but it sounded like as if a big bad wolf came in and started huffing and puffing. Then POW!!! I opened my eyes and saw that the balloon had popped into shards. Everybody screamed and I jumped back."

Before we wrote this, we brainstormed on the whiteboard together as a class and came up with cool ideas and expressions that described this experience. We tried to use a metaphor, simile and an onomatopoeia.

Here is our plan for the writing:

Week 4, Term 1: Shared Reading

For the last couple of weeks, we have been reading the book called Wonder by R.J. Palacio.

The main character is August. He has a sister called Via she is really protective over Auggie (which is a short way of saying August). Auggie has a type of disease on his face, which has deformed his face. Auggie likes to play ball, eat ice cream and play X-box.

Auggie’s friends from Beecher Prep School is Jack Will and he is really nice. He does not like Julian because he is mean and always says rude things to Auggie. Another friend of Auggie is Summer and she has been really kind to Auggie. Auggie’s mum really likes Summer. Charlotte is nice as well like Summer.

As Miss Sung read the book aloud to us, we practiced making predictions, and made a character map on some of the main characters. We used the FAST map and looked at what the character's Feelings, Actions, Sayings and Thoughts.
